Workshop I: Developing Your Academic Presence on Twitter
In the decade since its inception, the social media platform Twitter has gone from experiment in microblogging to well-established site for social and professional organization and networking. Among its 300 million-plus users are thousands of academics who use it build and maintain social connections and friendships; conduct research; share and spread ideas, publications, and works-in-progress; teach and engage students in and out of the classroom; document talks, meetings and conferences; and network with like-minded others. In this workshop, Prof. Mary Chayko will review some of the affordances, opportunities, and consequences of Twitter for academics, and will demonstrate techniques for building and expanding an academic presence on Twitter. Strategies, policies, and best practices for the safe, productive, effective use of Twitter will be discussed. Participants need not have expertise or experience on Twitter but should sign up for a Twitter account prior to the workshop.

Thinking Like a Social Scientist, Writing Like a Journalist: Tales from the Field
Journalists present stories about what's happening in the world to a general audience. But how do they notice things? What counts as news? How do they know what questions to ask? One source of ideas, of thinking about words like poverty, power, privilege, gender, and class, is social science. Ted Conover will talk about how his background in social science made him a better journalist, and share some examples from his researches among railroad tramps, Mexican migrants, Aspenites and corrections officers.
This talk is co-sponsored by the Rutgers Program in Criminal Justice, Rutgers School of Communication and Information, and Rutgers Sociology Department.
